The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 2004 with an initial intake of 60 students and an additional section of 60 strong is added in 2011. The department is also offering diploma programme in mechanical engineering with an initial intake of 60 students and an additional section of 60 strong is added in 2013.
The department has 30 well qualified and experienced faculty supported by 6 Technical Staff. The faculty is actively engaged in research activities in their areas of specialization.
The department has very good infrastructure in terms of the state-of-the art laboratories, workshops, computer centre and software as required for B.Tech and Diploma programmes in Mechanical Engineering.
One of the key areas the Mechanical Department at SBIT has been excelling is in executing B.Tech projects on cutting edge technologies. Students have developed SBIT-Mini car using a pulsar engine, solar two wheeler, multi fuel engine, exhaust gas heat recovery power generation, multi functional refrigeration system, automatic wall paint sprayer, zip cooler based on thermo electric generator and working model of hydro electric generator in academic year 2010-11.
The visiting Oman committee on science and technology has commended the quality of research projects. Some worth mentioning projects in the academic year 2011-12 on filtration using Ceramic Membrane, AGV, Friction Stir Welding of aluminum alloys, SCARA Robot, Solar vaccine cooler. In academic year 2012-13 the worth mentioning projects are abrasive jet machining, solar vapor adsorption refrigerator magnetic coupling indicates the diversified activities of the Department.
Some of the key projects executed in the year 2013-14 are Solar PV concentrator using reflective mirrors, Dual axis solar tracker using linear actuator, Piezo electric energy harvesting demonstration. In the year 2014-15 students have designed and developed Floating Solar Power Plant, Solar Water Distillation system, Deep Freezer with PCM enclosed Evaporator, Comfort cooling of a Room using Phase Change Materials. The key projects delivered in the year 2015-16 are Solar tunnel dryer, HHO generator, Microwave processing of metallic materials, Demonstration of Drone.
